Purnendu Chatterjee: The billionaire who lost in West Bengal
Purnendu Chatterjee, 62, made billions from his ventures overseas and across India.
Sadly, he lost the most in West Bengal, where his investment intentions were honorable in giving back to his home state a slice of his success.
His ouster this week as chairman of Haldia Petrochemicals by the government marks the lowest point in a turbulent relationship with the West Bengal government, a partner in the project.
While critics blame Chatterjee for the mess that the company is in, his close friends such as Utpal Sengupta say Haldia’s debacle was because of its genesis with a communist partner.
“Can you tell me who has done well in Bengal,” says Sengupta who was the managing director of ITC ConAgra.
“He could have invested anywhere else in the world and it would have been a success.”
Sengupta, like Chatterjee, is a recipient of the prestigious Jagadis Bose National Science Talent Search Scholarship. H
